My brother Doug tells a funny but true story about a surprise encounter he had on an Oregon State Park trail in the John Day fossil-beds. Only fifty yards from the parking lot on a steep switch-back, he encountered a rattlesnake, coiled and poised to strike. He stopped and held his breath, then slowly backed off from the menacing creature. Doug turned and picked up his pace as he returned to the parking lot where he met up with a park ranger. “You should post a warning sign to hikers about rattlers,” Doug admonished. The ranger replied, “Yep, we used to. Just took the sign down last week for the start of tourist season.” My brother challenged, “Are you crazy? Why would you take it down?” The ranger said, “Well, we had a problem. When the sign was up, nobody’d go up the trail to see the fossil beds.” [read more . . .] |
